There are a few brands of thru hikers. The 25 milers who seem to float down the trail as they speed ever on-wards towards the opposite terminus, and the ones who like to stop and take pictures of the cacti (that would be me).

It became clear today that the three of us hike at different speeds. Rod, falls into the 25 miles a day category with me in the middle stopping at every new species of plant, and Vance limping along a couple miles behind.

We just decided to meet up at a place called Kentucky Camp – an old mining homestead that now offered a place to charge phones and rest in some shade for hikers.

It was a beautiful hike through the mountains that morning, every corner had incredible views and I even stumbled across a deer leg in the trail. The deer are tiny there, they are mostly mule deer and are about the size of a German Shepard.

When I got to Kentucky Camp Rod was asleep and had been there for about an hour. Vance came through about 40 minutes after that.

We set off again, and even through the foot pain the miles seemed to fly by with the incredible light from the sunset.

We got to camp earlier today with still about an hour of light left, not quite as luxurious as yesterday, but still a nice flat spot with a decent water source.

I got stung by an Africanized bee while setting up my tent, and was amazed at the speed with which my hand swelled up. I barely got my watch off in time. Thankfully I took some Benadryl and the swelling went down pretty quickly.

Beautiful night at camp, we are all on hiking time and go to sleep at 7:00 when it gets dark. Vance and I are going to try to leave before Rod tomorrow to make up for our slower speeds.
